Tips and Tricks to Get Glowing Skin!

With makeup trends leaning into the natural makeup look in the recent years, skincare has taken a front seat to makeup. It is important to have a well prepped base under your makeup to look flawless and last all day. Below are a few skincare methods you should try that may help quench dry, flaky skin and improve skin texture over time.

Slugging

Skin slugging is a K-beauty skincare technique that has become a major trend on Tik Tok. It involves applying an occlusive ointment such as vaseline or aquaphor before bed to wake up with moisturized, glowing skin! Start by cleansing your face with a gentle cleanser, then apply a lightweight moisturizer. Next, apply a dime sized amount of vaseline or aquaphor to your entire face. Be sure to not apply any actives when using this technique (particularly, anything containing retinol) as it can make those ingredients more potent, leading to irritation. Vaseline and aquaphor are non comedogenic so you don’t need to worry about them clogging your pores! Use this method once a week.

Flooding

The idea behind skin flooding is to introduce moisture back into your skin. Start by cleansing your face, then apply a thermal water facial spray. While your face is still wet, apply a serum containing humectants like hyaluronic acid, squalane, glycerin, or a combination of the three. Humectants bind to water and will help your skin retain moisture. This technique can be incorporated into your daily skincare routine.

Oil Cleansing

Oil cleansing involves applying a mixture of oils to the face prior to using a traditional face cleanser to help remove impurities and prevent your skin from drying out. Many brands have come out with their own oil cleansers that are available online, in beauty stores, and the drugstore so there are many options available, however you can also create your own at home! Start with a 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil and 1/2 teaspoon of castor oil. Avoid using food grade oils, instead, opt for cold pressed oils designed for topical use. Mix these oils together and apply to your face prior to wetting your face. Then use a damp, warm washcloth to gently wipe away the oil. You can leave your skin as is and apply your usual night time moisturizer or follow up with your favorite gentle face cleanser first. It is recommended to do this only once a day.
